An ethnomusicologist specializing in Turkish music, Karl Signell studied with ney master Akagündüz Kutbay in Istanbul. Signell performed with Kutbay at the Mevlana sufi ceremony in Konya and in concerts and recording sessions. He learned Javanese court gamelan orchestra in Java and performed for 17 years with the gamelan at the Indonesian Embassy, Washington, D.C. An amateur shakuhachi player, he studied with Yamaguchi Goro at Wesleyan University and in Tokyo.
