Japan Tenri Tours
To celebrate my 30th year of Tenri Tours I have created this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan! While the central theme of my trips is always Shakuhachi, this year I am delighted to be able to include a taste of Basho.

We will be traveling along the road made famous in Basho's most famous book of travels and haiku poetry "Narrow Road to the Deep North" (Oku No Hosomichi). We will be visiting places that are both mentioned in Basho's famous travelogue and are also important historically to Shakuhachi. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful countryside of Japan — with stays in quaint mountain and seaside villages.

Some of the highlights of the trip:
  • We will perform Horai at the shakuhachi temple of Kokutaiji where it was created in the town of Takaoka.
  • The "Living Pottery Village" in Mashiko.
  • Eiheiji (Dogen Zenji's famous temple) in Fukuii.
  • The Nikko Sugi-Namiki Kaido (Cedar Avenue of Nikko) — avenue of tall and regal Cedar trees planted almost 300 years ago by a feudal lord in the Tokugawa period.
  • Visit with esteemed Shakuhachi Maker Sadao Chinone in Ibaraki Prefecture.
  • A stay at onsen (hot springs) in the Noto Peninsula.
  • A six day stay in Kyoto that will include: a visit to the Imperial Gardens, temple sales, Meian-ji Temple, a visit to a Shakuhachi store (Kanazen), day trips to Uji (Birthplace of the Tea ceremony) and unlimited lessons with Kurahashi Sensei (not included in price of tour).
  • Two days in Tokyo — including a visit to Asakusa, and to a Shakuhachi store (Mejiro).
